COBE COPU Classic is an up-cycled cocoa fruit drink. It’s made from cocoa bean shells and sweetened with cocoa fruit juice. It can also be called cocoa lemonade.

The inventor of COBE COPU  is Dayog Kabore. Dayog Kabore is an Award-Winning Food Entrepreneur, multi-lingual Consultant and Political Scientist.

Both terms exist in English but mean different parts of the cocoa fruit. Cocoa shells are the outer shells of the cocoa fruit that are obtained after the fruit is opened to extract the cocoa beans (also called cocoa seeds). In most cases, cocoa shells remain in the fields and decompose over time.

However, the shells we currently use for our products are the shells of the cocoa beans (or cocoa husks). These are obtained after fermentation, drying and toasting of the beans.

We use the word cocoa shells in some of our texts to refer to cocoa bean shells. This is because cocoa bean shells is a rather long word, and most people actually have cocoa bean shells in mind when they hear the word “cocoa shells”. If the context in question specifically refers to the shells of the cocoa fruit, this will be explicitly stated. By the way, cocoa bean shell tea or cocoa shell tea or cocoa bean shell tea are all terms that are used in connection with the use or utilization of the cocoa shells.

Cocoa shells have been discovered as a basis for aromatic tea or tea blends since before 1995. Yet cocoa shells have always been considered waste. However, cocoa shells have many beneficial health ingredients. Therefore, from 2021 to 2022, we collaborated with the Swiss Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZAHW) to investigate the possible applications and uses of cocoa bean shells for direct consumption (not only as tea or tea-like products or as an extract).

Following the successful completion of this first project, we are now working with the IFRAEM FIRM research institute on the concrete development of innovations focusing on Sensorial and nutritional quality attributes of the cocoa fruit.

Cocoa shells contain many health-promoting compounds. In fact, cocoa shells are a waste product of cocoa beans, created during the conventional process of processing cocoa beans into chocolate. However, research has shown that cocoa shells – this waste product – are full of valuable nutrients. For example, they contain almost no calories and, unlike the beans, no xanthine. They also contain more caffeine but less theobromine than the beans. A 2019 study led by Prof. Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia showed that cocoa shells can have positive effects on obesity in mice, which may be transferable to humans.

Yes. COBE COPU Classic is vegetarian and vegan.

Yes. COBE COPU Classic is gluten-free and lactose-free. Our cocoa fruit soft drinks are made from cocoa, but they do not contain milk like traditional cocoa drinks

COBE COPU Classic is not yet certified organic. As a young, innovative cocoa start-up, we are committed to promoting a healthy, health-conscious lifestyle by developing innovative products made from cocoa. This is reflected in the high quality standards we set for our raw materials. This is why we only work with partner farmers who have been selected through strict quality controls.

Our current partner farmers in Côte d’Ivoire use organic methods. However, they have not had the resources to go through the expensive organic certification process. We are now helping them through this process. As all other ingredients in our drinks are organic, it is only a matter of months before we can complete the certification of our products.

COBE COPU Classic contains only 2.58g of sugar per 100ml. This is significantly less sugar than traditional sugary lemonades (at least 7g/100ml), and not even half as much.
